The Air 5438 Phase 1A – LIFCAP Project provided facilities and associated infrastructure for three Full Mission Simulators (FMS) for the upgraded Hawk 127 aircraft. Two FMS were installed at RAAF Base Williamtown, NSW (WLM) and one at RAAF Base Pearce, WA (PEA). The new FMS replaced existing simulators which continued to be fully functional during the complete construction phase of the Project. The new facilities were constructed in preparation for the supply and installation of the FMS by Defence.
The Project configuration involved building new standalone (approx. 900m2) dedicated simulator facilities at 76 SQN WLM, and a new building of approx. 500m2 , adjacent to the existing 79SQN HQ building at PEA.
The works included the following (at each Base):
- Flight Simulator Halls
- Computer room
- General office/staff accommodation
- Technical storage space
- Plant rooms
- Covered link and entries.
Both sites were centred on operational airfields with unique considerations relating to project delivery. Of primary concern was ensuring the safety of all personnel and maintaining the daily operation of each site. St Hilliers were highly conscious of the impact of noise and dust on day-to-day activities and implemented suppression procedures from the outset to minimise the impact of these on operational activities.
